Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men. Estimates indicate that it is found in as many as half of all men over the age of 70 and in almost all men over the age of 90 in America. Since the discovery of the blood test for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) in the 1980’s, prostate cancer can now be detected at a much earlier stage. While most men may eventually develope prostate cancer, most don’t need treatment.

Stop!!! I understand most guys stopped reading instruction manuals when they hit puberty but you have two real important reasons to read the instructions for your vasectomy, namely righty and lefty. But if you still don’t want to read them at least 1) don’t take any blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, alleve etc) for 1 week prior, 2) shave your scrotum prior to coming in and 3) show up at either 9 am or 2 pm so we can give you your prescriptions to relax (plan on getting to the office, seeing me, driving 1 block to pick up your medications [thank your congress person for this convenience] then returning for the procedure. You’ll be busy about 3 hours for a 15 min procedure). 4) If you’ve already had your consult, make sure to take all 4 pills about 45 minutes before your procedure. 5) Please buy and bring a jockstrap (not a cup). They conveniently have them at Dick’s Sporting Goods or on Amazon (make sure to get the right size).

Thanks, RSN

One of the first questions I ask my patients is “do you have any problems peeing?” I’m surprised how often a person will say something to the effect, “No, I pee all the time” or “No, I pee every hour”. We combine all these symptoms into a common term called Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms, or LUTS. So if you pee every hour, wake up several times at night to urinate, struggle to get it out, or can’t get to the bathroom in time then you have LUTS.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH, is a condition in which the prostate enlarges as men get older. Over 70% of men in their 60s have BPH symptoms so it is very common. While BPH is a benign condition and unrelated to prostate cancer, it can greatly affect a man’s quality of life.

Prostate Specific Antigen, or PSA for short, is a protein that is produced by prostate cells. The PSA increases as men age, when the prostate enlarges or becomes inflamed and when prostate cancer is present. There are also transient bumps in PSA after digital rectal exam (DRE), ejaculation, and bike riding. PSA is prostate specific but not cancer specific. There are different ways in which to look at your PSA.

You came to this page because you have an issue with your prostate. What is the prostate? The prostate gland is essential for a man’s reproductive system to work. It makes a lot of the fluid that comes out when he ejaculates. The fluid the prostate makes, ultimately helps get a woman pregnant. Prostates come in all sizes. It starts small and starts growing at puberty as it is exposed to androgens (male hormones like testosterone, DHT etc).

Urology Defined

Urology is the medical and surgical specialty that deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tracts and the male reproductive organs. Although urology is classified as a surgical specialty, knowledge of internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, and other specialties is required by the urologist because of the wide variety of clinical problems encountered.

Explore this site to learn more and be more informed. It is intended to give you more knowledge about urology and related conditions. It’s not, however, intended to diagnose or offer treatment solutions for you or a family member’s particular medical conditions or challenges. It’s your first step to feeling better and greater peace of mind.
